Are you confused about sun protection and the often conflicting reports? We’re told to use sunscreen to protect against sun damage and prevent skin cancer, but we’re also told that the chemicals in sunscreen could be harmful. What should we do? Well, we may be right to be concerned about sun damage. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 2 million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer every year, and the occurrences are actually increasing. However, many sunscreens could be causing harm; according to a study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 97 percent of Americans are contaminated with a widely-used chemical in sunscreens -- oxybenzone – which can cause allergic reactions, hormone disruption and cell damage.
Yesterday on the Inspirations for Wellness Facebook page, I posted a list of ingredients for guessing. Something for fun but also for enlightenment. The game is over. No one guessed the correct answer, by the way but I'll share here. It was Welch's fruit snacks. You can see an image of the front of the package below. Of course, I have a few things to say about what you see on the front of the package versus in the ingredients list. Actually that's precisely why you are reading this as a blog post instead of a Facebook post. So I could say a little more in a more organized format. :)
Who doesn't want beautiful, smooth, glowing skin? Oh the time and money that goes into making it beautiful from the outside with lotions, potions, elixirs and make-up?! I know I used to do that and then some. And guess what I have found? The more I pay attention to my diet, the better my skin looks. I've traded lotions, potions, serums, scrubs and facials for a plant based, nutrient packed diet. Those lotions and potions can only reach the outermost layers of our skin. Whole food nutrition nurtures glowing skin from the inside out. Nourishing food nourishes our skin. Toxic, chemical laden, high fat, processed food damages our skin.
Obviously, my focus is to encourage you to get more plant food into your own body and also the bodies of your kids - as easily and efficiently as possible. Why is that? Most of us grew up with someone, usually Mom, saying "eat your fruits and vegetables". We all know they are good for us and that we should probably be eating more. But, hey, if I can get by without, why not? Unfortunately the "getting by" part only lasts for awhile. A bad habit or lack of good habits in this case, generally catches up with us sooner or later.
As each generation eats more poorly than the last, we are seeing each new generation getting sicker more quickly than the last. This truly breaks my heart! Did you know or do you remember that type 2 diabetes used to be called "adult onset diabetes"? Diet and lifestyle are the reasons we are seeing it in kids and can no longer call it "adult onset". Fruits and vegetables are critical if you want to be healthy - meaning free from disease whether that is a cold or flu or something life threatening like cancer or heart disease. I'm not saying they are everything but they certainly are a HUGE piece of the equation. This is even more important for kids. They are developing healthy or unhealthy habits now that will stick with them for a lifetime. What you teach, model, and encourage now will have a lasting impact on your child's health. Please read on. There is so much to say on this topic but I've tried to keep it brief.
